I think we all want safety. We typically do not frequent places that have the potential to harm us. Our homes are most likely the safest places we know.
In my home no one will hurt me. I can relax there. I can be myself there without anyone harming me.
I believe our congregations should be safe zones. A spiritual family. A family full of misfits and sinners saved by Christ where no potential for harm exists. A family that we really want to be a part of. Sometimes "going to Church" (by the way I do not like this phrase) people my feel as if they are swimming in shark infested waters with a bucket of chum around their neck. Smart people run from potential danger. Maybe this is one of the reasons some people just stay home. Have you ever felt unsafe in the assembly? Paul points out to the Corinthians that their meetings were doing more harm than good. Why does this happen? More importantly, what's the fix?
We can have the structure right, elders, deacons, preachers, teachers, three songs and a prayer, you get the point, but still be lacking. Does the Ephesian church from Revelation ring any bells?
I believe everyone wants and needs the safety that love provides. Jesus commands 1 thing....love (John 13:34-35). It's how everyone will know that we are the real deal.
Living the One Another's is the fix.
Think about how safe and family-like a congregation would look and most importantly feel if it were actively living out the One Another's. Why would those outside of Christ want to be a part of a group that doesn't "feel" safe? The One Another's (love being the primary one) help us be like Jesus. They provide us with a To Do List. As we incorporate these into our lives the Church begins to be family. A safe nonabrasive family. A family that provides safety through the daily incorporation of the One Another's. Then everyone will know and it will be good!
