God intended for the male /female relationship to be complementary not competitive. The result of Adam & Eve's sin was competition. Think about it. They hid from one another first. Remember the fig leaves? Once sin entered the relationship they began protecting themselves by building barriers. Later they would hide from God.
These barriers didn't cover their entire bodies, just the part that represents gender....and the war began! A war demands a winner and loser. The one flesh relationship created by God had now become two competing individuals that needed to be protected from the eyes of the other.
You can't love while protecting yourself. Learning to love in marriage is learning to be vulnerable with your spouse. Think about all the games we play to guard ourselves from our spouses. The fear is that if the guard is let down and we become vulnerable, we will get hurt. Stop competing.....stop protecting.....stop the games.....stop the selfishness.....and start loving your spouse.
